Common Sense Education

This week my blog post is about a website called common sense education. This website teaches young children about the importance of common sense when using online media and technology. The third grade classroom I am placed in receives a 30 minute presentation for six weeks. Each week is a different topic surrounding digital citizenship. The six topics include; Your Rings of Responsibility, Password Power-Up, This Is Me, Our Digital Citizenship Pledge, The Power Of Words and Is Seeing Believing?

This program allows students to understand anything from media balance & well being to cyberbullying. Below is a worksheet that went with the lesson from week four, Our Digital Citizenship Pledge. Within this lesson students learned about what kinds of things make a digital community and the social norms we follow online. The class then came together to create a group pledge to follow when using online resources and technology. This worksheet specifically lets students see how these social norms helps the online community.

Students in the third grade classroom I am placed are using technology on the daily. I personally think that this is very appropriate time for students to learn about digital citizenship and how to use these guidelines when using media.

  1. This is interesting...I really am enjoying the different types of technology your class is using. It is way more than my little 1st graders are using. Amazing what a couple years can do to change the depth of what children are learning. I'm interested to know if you feel like there are some technology pieces the children are utilizing that you feel are not working out so well? It seems your CT has a lot of experience introducing new technology pieces to the children and they catch on very quickly how to use them. Your CT sounds like a great role model to have!
