Coding On Computers

Let's Code!

This week the piece of technology I have chose to blog about is a website called code.org. This website requires each student to have a login. My cooperating teacher has created log in cards for reach student that they use, which makes the log in process fast and easy. The students used this in the computer lab during their assigned class time. The computer lab is used on Friday's for the 3rd grade classroom I am in. Students were ecstatic to be using this tool! Below are some pictures of the computer screens and the kinds of things they would be coding.

The picture to the left is showing the different levels of specifically the sequencing lesson. As students complete one lesson they move onto the next.

This picture below is showing some of the coding games or challenges they have to complete. The games are fun for students as they use characters and scenarios that they can relate to!  There are also questions that make kids think deeper and visualize where they went wrong in their coding. The 'run' button is used to show the code they've created and allows them to see where they went wrong or right. Some of the challenges only let you use a certain amount of tiles.

Students were actively engaged during the whole duration of computer lab time, as seen below. This time allows not only the students to have some fun while challenging themselves but also allows the teacher time to prep, correct, etc. I think this would be an awesome tool that I would like to incorporate into my classroom someday.

  1. Wow, that looks like so much fun! It's hard to believe that 3rd graders can grab on to these new kinds of technology and just take off with their learning. This type of technology is a sure way to grab their attention and it is easy to see the relevance of what they're doing in class to the real world. You sure have a lot of unique experiences in your classroom with different kinds of technology! What an experience to see all of this first hand. It sure takes it to a whole new level for you as a future teacher who could potentially use this in your classroom.
